Ranger leads on towing (7,500 vs 6,500 lb), payload (1,767 vs 1,705 lb), peak horsepower (405 hp Raptor) and NHTSA frontal rating. Tacoma leads on hybrid availability, peak torque (465 lb-ft), 4×4 fuel economy, base-engine output and IIHS results. Neither automaker has published full 2027 specifications, so the numbers below are 2026 figures except where marked; the 2027 Tacoma already has NHTSA ratings.
Comparison compiled from official manufacturer pricing and specifications, EPA fuel economy data, NHTSA and IIHS safety ratings. NextCarReview did not drive or test these vehicles. See our sourcing policy.
The Toyota Tacoma and Ford Ranger are the two midsize pickups most buyers compare first. Both are current-generation trucks, and neither has a confirmed 2027 redesign. This comparison uses official numbers only: Toyota and Ford specifications and prices, EPA ratings, NHTSA and IIHS results, and warranty terms. Our 2027 Toyota Tacoma guide covers the Toyota in more depth.
What Is Confirmed for the 2027 Tacoma and Ranger?
Very little beyond safety data. The Tacoma is not on Toyota’s What’s New for 2027 page as of October 4, 2026, but NHTSA has published 2027 Tacoma crash ratings. For the Ranger, we found no 2027 model in Ford’s US materials, the EPA database or NHTSA’s database; Ford’s Ranger page still lists the 2026 truck. Note that Ford’s websites blocked our automated requests, so Ford figures come from an archived copy of Ford.com from September 29, 2026.

We therefore do not rank the two on price; check Ford’s configurator for current Ranger pricing.
| Tacoma trim (2026) | MSRP |

| SR | $32,545 |
| SR5 | $36,635 |
| TRD PreRunner | $39,135 |

Which Should You Buy: Tacoma or Ranger?
On the numbers, the Ranger leads for buyers who tow or haul near a midsize truck’s limits or want the most horsepower in the Raptor. The Tacoma leads for buyers who want a hybrid, the most torque, better 4×4 fuel economy, a manual gearbox or the stronger IIHS results. Since neither brand has released 2027 pricing or specifications, wait for those announcements if you are not in a hurry, and compare configured prices including destination.
