Short version: The confirmed 2027 news is the six-seat Model Y L. The EPA lists it as a 2027 model with 328 miles of range, and it launched in the US in July 2026 as a $61,990 Launch Series, according to Electrek. The regular Model Y continues the 2026 redesign, with EPA range from 294 to 357 miles, and IIHS lists the 2027 Model Y as a Top Safety Pick+. Tesla has not announced any other 2027 changes.

Tesla is unusual among automakers: it rarely announces model years and updates its cars and prices throughout the year. So the clearest record of what a “2027 Model Y” is comes from government and safety databases. This guide uses those records, separates what is confirmed for 2027 from what is not announced, and labels any figure that comes from 2026 data.
What’s new for the 2027 Tesla Model Y?
- Model Y L (confirmed): FuelEconomy.gov lists a 2027 Tesla Model Y L, a stretched, six-seat version of the Model Y.
- 2027 Model Y safety ratings (confirmed): IIHS has published 2027 Model Y ratings, including a Top Safety Pick+ award. IIHS notes that the Model Y was redesigned for the 2026 model year and that its crash ratings apply to 2026-27 models.
- Regular Model Y changes (not announced): Tesla has not announced design, battery or motor changes for the five-seat Model Y for 2027. FuelEconomy.gov had no 2027 listing for the five-seat model as of October 4, 2026.
In other words, the 2027 five-seat Model Y is expected to carry over the redesign that arrived for 2026, and the Model Y L is the real addition. Claims of 2027 price increases or motor changes have not been confirmed by Tesla.

How much range does each Model Y version have?
EPA ratings for the five-seat 2027 Model Y have not been published yet. The table shows the official 2026 ratings from FuelEconomy.gov, which use the EPA’s version names, alongside the 2027 Model Y L. 2025 figures, from before the redesign, are included for comparison where the EPA name matches.
| Version (EPA name) | EPA range | Combined MPGe | 2025 range (pre-redesign) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 Standard RWD (18-in wheels) | 321 mi | 138 | n/a |
| 2026 Standard RWD (19-in wheels) | 303 mi | 131 | n/a |
| 2026 Standard AWD | 294 mi | 127 | n/a |
| 2026 Long Range RWD | 357 mi | 134 | 337 mi |
| 2026 Long Range AWD | 327 mi | 123 | 311 mi |
| 2026 Performance AWD | 306 mi | 105 | 277 mi |
| 2027 Model Y L (20-in wheels) | 328 mi | 114 | New model |
On these numbers, the Long Range RWD leads on range at 357 miles, and the Standard RWD on 18-inch wheels leads on efficiency at 138 MPGe. The Model Y L uses more energy than the five-seat Long Range AWD (114 vs. 123 MPGe) but has slightly more range (328 vs. 327 miles).
How much does the 2027 Model Y cost?
Tesla does not publish model-year price lists, and it changes prices and trim names throughout the year. IIHS tested a 2026 Model Y Premium AWD and applies the crash ratings to 2026-27 models. Its 2026 Model Y page shows the same test results. From NHTSA, every 2026 Model Y version listed (RWD and AWD, early and later builds) earns 5 stars overall, with 5 stars for frontal, side and rollover. NHTSA has not yet rated the 2027 Model Y or the Model Y L.
Should you buy a 2026 Model Y or wait for the 2027?
- Need six seats? The Model Y L is the reason to look at a 2027. Compare its official specs with other three-row SUVs, such as the vehicle in our 2027 Kia Telluride redesign guide.
- Five seats is enough? Tesla has not announced 2027 changes, so the current car is the same design. Compare EPA range and current tesla.com pricing rather than waiting for a model-year change.
