Short version: The main Mustang news for 2027 is the Dark Horse SC Convertible (Ford has not stated its model year): a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 with 795 hp and 660 lb-ft, a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, orders from fall 2026 and dealer arrivals from spring 2027. The 2027 Mustang GTD is also on sale by application. Ford has not announced 2027 pricing or changes for the EcoBoost, GT or Dark Horse, so the 2026 figures below are the official reference.

Searches for the 2027 Ford Mustang turn up plenty of rumors: refreshed lighting, new interiors, new trims. Very little of that has come from Ford. This guide sticks to what Ford and Ford Racing have published, separates what is confirmed for 2027 from what is not yet announced, and uses official 2026 numbers wherever a 2027 figure does not exist.
What’s new for the 2027 Ford Mustang?
As of October 4, 2026, Ford has announced two Mustangs for 2027:
- Mustang Dark Horse SC Convertible: revealed in August 2026 for spring 2027 dealer arrival; Ford has not stated its model year. Ford Racing calls it “the first new high-performance Mustang convertible since 2013 and the most powerful open-air Mustang ever.”
- 2027 Mustang GTD: Ford reopened GTD applications on April 17, 2026, covering the next three years of production.
Ford has not issued a 2027 announcement for the rest of the lineup. It has not confirmed styling changes, new colors (other than the SC Convertible’s paint), interior updates, trim changes or prices for the 2027 EcoBoost, GT or Dark Horse. Treat claims of a 2027 refresh as unconfirmed until Ford publishes them.

What is the Mustang Dark Horse SC Convertible?
According to Ford’s specs-and-features article (August 14, 2026) and the Ford Racing announcement, the convertible uses the same supercharged 5.2-liter V8 as the Dark Horse SC coupe, rated at 795 hp and 660 lb-ft of torque on premium fuel. It is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
Ford says the convertible is tuned for “top-down grand touring” rather than lap times. Its next-generation MagneRide adaptive suspension was specially tuned for street driving. Confirmed appearance details include a new Precision Purple Metallic paint, unique brake caliper colors and Black Onyx or Space Gray interiors.
Not yet announced: price, weight, 0-60 mph time, top speed and EPA fuel economy.

How does it compare with the Dark Horse SC coupe?
The coupe is a 2026 model, not a 2027. Ford Racing announced it on January 14, 2026, with orders opening in spring 2026 and deliveries in the summer. Ford’s April 2026 article adds that the coupe’s aluminum hood with a carbon-fiber vent produces 2.5 times the downforce of the standard Dark Horse.
| Spec | Dark Horse SC coupe (2026) | Dark Horse SC Convertible (arrives 2027) |
|---|---|---|
| Engine | Supercharged 5.2L V8 | Supercharged 5.2L V8 |
| Output | 795 hp / 660 lb-ft | 795 hp / 660 lb-ft |
| Transmission | Tremec 7-speed dual-clutch | 7-speed dual-clutch |
| Focus | Track (optional Track Pack) | Street grand touring |
| Track Pack | Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires, rear-seat delete, 20-in carbon-fiber wheels | Not announced |
| Rear downforce | 620 lbs at 180 mph (Track Pack) | Not announced |
| Availability | Orders spring 2026, deliveries summer 2026 | Orders fall 2026, dealers spring 2027 |
| Price | Not stated in Ford’s announcements | Not announced |
Ford says the Track Pack wheels and related parts save about 150 lbs. The Track Pack tires measure 305/30R20 in front and 315/30R20 at the rear.
What engines does the current Mustang lineup offer?
Until Ford publishes 2027 specs, the 2026 lineup on Ford.com is the reference. The table pairs Ford’s power figures with FuelEconomy.gov ratings.
| 2026 Mustang | Engine and power (Ford) | EPA city/hwy/combined |
|---|---|---|
| EcoBoost (fastback, convertible) | 2.3L turbo four, 315 hp | 22 / 33 / 26 mpg (10-speed auto) |
| GT (fastback, convertible) | 5.0L V8, 480 hp; 6-speed manual with rev matching | 16 / 24 / 19 mpg (auto); 15 / 23 / 18 mpg (manual) |
| Dark Horse | Modified 5.0L V8, 500 hp; available Tremec 6-speed manual | 14 / 22 / 17 mpg |
| Dark Horse SC | Supercharged 5.2L V8, 795 hp; Tremec 7-speed DCT | Not listed on FuelEconomy.gov |
| GTD | Supercharged 5.2L V8 | 10 / 17 / 12 mpg |
Ford.com also lists an RTR package for the 2026 EcoBoost fastback, which Ford describes as the first factory-produced RTR Mustang. So the RTR is already part of the 2026 lineup, not a future 2027 addition. On the 2026 numbers, the EcoBoost leads the lineup on fuel economy at 26 mpg combined, and the GT is the cheapest way to get a V8 with a manual transmission.

What about the 2027 Mustang GTD?
Ford’s GTD application article confirms a 2027 Mustang GTD. Applications reopened on April 17, 2026, Mustang’s 62nd birthday, and cover the next three years of production. Ford calls the GTD the first car from an American automaker to lap the Nürburgring in under seven minutes. It uses a supercharged 5.2-liter V8. Ford’s article does not list a price or production count, so this guide does not give one.
When is the 2027 Ford Mustang release date?
Confirmed: Dark Horse SC Convertible orders open in fall 2026, and cars reach dealers starting in spring 2027.
Not yet announced: order and on-sale dates for the 2027 EcoBoost, GT and Dark Horse. Ford hasn’t said whether those versions will change for 2027. A Ford dealer can tell you when 2027 order banks open.

Is the Ford Mustang safe?
There are no 2027 crash-test results yet. For 2026, NHTSA gives the Mustang coupe 5 stars overall, with 5 stars in the frontal, side and rollover categories. The 2026 convertible has only a rollover rating, also 5 stars; its other categories are not rated.
The IIHS has tested the Mustang far less than mainstream cars. Its listing has only a driver-side small overlap rating of Acceptable, from a 2016 Mustang GT, which IIHS applies to 2015-26 models. LATCH ease of use is rated Marginal. Blind-spot detection, lane-departure warning and prevention, and rear automatic braking are standard.
Should you buy a 2026 Mustang or wait for 2027?
- Wait if you want the Dark Horse SC Convertible. Apart from the GTD, it is the only new Mustang Ford has announced for 2027.
- Buy a 2026 if you want an EcoBoost, GT, Dark Horse or Dark Horse SC coupe. Ford has not announced 2027 changes for them, and the 2026 cars have published EPA and NHTSA ratings.
