📌 Quick Answer

A new 2026 Honda comes with a 3-year/36,000-mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty (including the 12-volt battery), a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty, 5 years of unlimited-mile rust perforation coverage and a 15-year/150,000-mile seat belt warranty. Honda’s owner site points owners to 24-hour roadside assistance during the warranty term; confirm the current terms with Honda.

Hybrid battery coverage comes through Honda’s emissions warranties: 8 years/100,000 miles federally and 10 years/150,000 miles in California-rule states, per Honda’s 2025 Civic Hybrid parts list. Honda Care is Honda’s own extended service contract; get its current terms in writing from a dealer.

This is general information, not legal advice. Check your own warranty booklet: coverage can differ by model, model year, powertrain and state.

Honda’s warranty follows the most common pattern among mainstream brands, 3 years of bumper-to-bumper coverage and 5 years on the powertrain, but its booklet contains several less-known extras: a 15-year seat belt warranty, a 100-month warranty on replacement 12-volt batteries and lifetime coverage on dealer-installed replacement exhaust parts. This guide summarizes what the 2026 booklet covers and where the limits are.

The New Vehicle Limited Warranty starts when the car is delivered to the first purchaser, leased, or used as a demonstrator or company vehicle, and Honda will repair or replace any part that is defective in material or workmanship under normal use (Honda 2026 booklet). The powertrain warranty begins on the same date and runs 5 years or 60,000 miles; some powertrain parts also have longer coverage under the emissions warranties.

What Is Not Covered by the Honda Warranty?

The 2026 booklet excludes:

  • Failures due to abuse, misuse, accidental damage or acts of nature; improper installation or maintenance; low fluid levels or fluids other than those Honda specifies; parts not equal to the original in quality; competition or racing; and improper fueling.
  • Failures caused by modifications or accessories not authorized by Honda.
  • Any vehicle with an altered odometer, any vehicle registered or normally driven outside the US and its listed territories, and any vehicle ever declared a total loss or given a salvage or similar title (with exceptions for the emissions warranties, seat belt warranty, replacement parts warranty and recalls).
  • Broken or chipped glass not caused by a defect, cosmetic flaws not caused by a defect, and expendable maintenance items such as filters and brake pads when worn normally.
  • Incidental costs from loss of use of the vehicle.

Some items have short coverage: key fob batteries and original wiper blade inserts are covered for the first 6 months of ownership. Keep maintenance records; the booklet makes proper maintenance a condition of coverage.

How Long Is the Honda Hybrid Battery Warranty?

The 2026 booklet’s Hybrid Powertrain Limited Warranty applies to all Honda models with hybrid powertrains and points owners to the Emissions Warranty Parts List for durations. In Honda’s parts list for the 2025 Civic Hybrid, the hybrid battery module is covered for 8 years/100,000 miles under federal coverage and 10 years/150,000 miles under California coverage, which Honda applies in California and other states that have adopted its emissions warranty rules. The battery control module and integrated control module show 8/100,000 federally and 15/150,000 under California coverage (Honda parts list).

Check the parts list for your exact model and year at mygarage.honda.com, since coverage can vary by vehicle and location. Hybrids now make up much of Honda’s lineup; our CR-V vs RAV4 comparison and 2025 Accord review cover the hybrid models.

Separately, federal law requires every automaker to provide emissions warranties. The EPA explains that emission-related defects are covered for 2 years or 24,000 miles, that specified major emission control components (the catalytic converters, the electronic emissions control unit and the onboard diagnostic device) are covered for 8 years or 80,000 miles, and that these warranties apply to used vehicles as well (EPA). Vehicles certified to California rules can carry longer emissions coverage in California and the states that follow its program.

Honda’s booklet adds its own emissions terms: the federal defect and performance warranties, and in California-rule states a 3-year/50,000-mile basic emissions warranty with 7-year/70,000-mile coverage on specially noted parts (Honda 2026 booklet). An emissions-related check engine light, such as an EVAP fault, may fall under these terms; our guide to the P1457 code on Honda explains one common case.

Does the Honda Warranty Transfer to a Second Owner?

Generally yes, for the remaining time and mileage. The booklet states its warranty coverages are offered to the owner or lessee of a 2026 Honda distributed by American Honda and sold by an authorized dealer in the US and listed territories. Because every term is measured from the original in-service date, a later owner inherits whatever coverage is left.

There is one important exception. The Rust Perforation Limited Warranty states that only the vehicle’s original owner or lessee can make a claim, and that coverage cannot be transferred to any other person or institution (Honda 2026 booklet). Used-car shoppers should confirm the in-service date with a dealer, decode the VIN with our free VIN decoder and follow our used-car checklist.

What Roadside Assistance Does Honda Include?

Honda’s owner site has described 24-hour Roadside Assistance for recent models that runs through the 3-year/36,000-mile warranty term and covers services such as towing, jump starts, fuel delivery, lockouts and flat tires. The roadside page now redirects to Honda’s MyGarage portal, which did not load for us to check, and the 2026 warranty booklet does not describe roadside terms. Confirm eligibility and services for your model year with Honda (Honda). Honda does not list a complimentary scheduled maintenance plan in the 2026 booklet; maintenance is the owner’s responsibility.

Is Honda Care Worth It?

Honda Care is Honda’s own vehicle service contract, sold through Honda dealers. Honda has described mechanical and electrical plans with terms up to 8 years or 120,000 miles, transfer to a new owner, pro-rated refunds on cancellation and eligibility for vehicles under 3 years and 36,000 miles. Honda’s Honda Care page now redirects to a general help page, so we could not confirm the current terms. Ask the dealer for the written contract and check the term, covered parts and exclusions, transfer fee and cancellation terms before you buy. Honda does not publish prices.

The math is about overlap. Honda’s basic warranty ends at 3 years/36,000 miles and the powertrain warranty at 5 years/60,000 miles, so a long contract mostly pays for repairs in the years after the factory coverage ends. It makes the most sense for owners who drive many miles or keep cars a long time and want protection against a large electronics or drivetrain bill.

Before buying any plan, the FTC suggests comparing the contract with the factory warranty you already have: when coverage starts, the deductible, which parts are excluded, whether repairs need pre-approval, and whether the plan can be transferred or cancelled (FTC). The CFPB notes that extended plans are optional add-ons whose price can be negotiated, and that you can cancel optional add-ons (CFPB). Read the contract to see who backs the plan and where repairs can be done.
