Off-Road Trims
GMC’s off-road trims are the AT4 and AT4X. Chevrolet offers three lifted trims: the Custom Trail Boss, the Trail Boss and the ZR2, plus a ZR2 Bison Edition built with AEV. The Chevy lineup gives you a lifted truck at a much lower price, starting with the $57,195 Custom Trail Boss.
Luxury Trims
The Sierra Denali and Denali Ultimate are the most luxurious of the pair. The Denali Ultimate comes standard with the 6.6L V8, massaging front seats, a 15-inch head-up display and more than 60 inches of combined screens. The Silverado High Country answers with 22-inch wheels, a Silverado-first panoramic sunroof and an 11.5-inch front passenger screen with a head-up display and rear camera mirror.
Engines and Towing
Both trucks use the same four engines and the same 10-speed automatic, according to the GMC and Chevrolet specification sheets:
- 2.7L TurboMax: 350 hp and 455 lb-ft
- New 5.7L V8: 402 hp and 428 lb-ft
- New 6.6L V8: 481 hp and 501 lb-ft
- 3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel: 305 hp and 495 lb-ft
For towing, Chevrolet publishes up to 13,700 pounds for a 5.7L V8 2WD Double Cab with the Max Trailering package, and GMC quotes up to 13,500 pounds for its 5.7L V8 when properly equipped. With the same engines, the real difference for your truck depends on cab, bed, axle and package, not the badge. Chevrolet also lists up to 2,340 pounds of payload for a 2.7L Regular Cab 2WD.
The EPA has not published fuel economy for either truck yet.
Interior and Technology
Both get a 16.3-inch center screen and a 12.2-inch driver display as standard, GM’s new software with Google built-in, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Both offer Super Cruise with trailering capability.
- Sierra: MultiPro center console with a work surface, available articulating screen with hidden storage, real wood on several trims, forged wood on Denali Ultimate and carbon fiber on AT4X. Super Cruise is standard on AT4, AT4X, Denali and Denali Ultimate.
- Silverado: reconfigurable Multi-Flex center console, forged carbon fiber trim on the ZR2 (GM’s first use of forged carbon), and a panoramic sunroof on the High Country.
Styling
The Sierra gets a more upright body, a more vertical grille, 7-shaped headlamps and taillamps with welcome animations and available quad exhaust. The Silverado gets new LED headlamps and taillamps, a bolder front fascia, larger wheel opening moldings and standard dual exhaust from the Custom trim up. New colors include Mesa Red for the Sierra and Apex Red for the Silverado.
Which Should You Buy?
- Buy the Silverado for the lowest entry price, a basic Work Truck, or a lifted off-road truck for less money.
- Buy the Sierra for a more premium cabin, Super Cruise as standard on more trims, or the top-luxury Denali Ultimate.
- Either one if you mainly care about engines and towing, because the hardware is shared. Compare real quotes for the same configuration.
