A P0507 code on a Nissan means the engine control module (ECM) saw the engine idling well above its target speed. On Nissan’s drive-by-wire engines there is no separate idle air valve to blame: the ECM sets idle with the electronic throttle body and learns the right airflow through a Nissan procedure called Idle Air Volume Learning. When that learned value stops matching the engine, P0507 is the usual result.
Quick answer: On a Nissan, P0507 (Nissan’s label: “ISC SYSTEM”) means idle speed ran too far above the ECM’s target. It is usually safe to drive short term. The most common fix is Nissan’s Idle Air Volume Learning, often after a throttle body cleaning, battery test or ECM update. NTB21-049 allows 0.6 warranty hours for the battery test and relearn; a new throttle body is the costly last resort.

What Does P0507 Mean on a Nissan?
Generic code lists such as FIXD’s describe P0507 as “Idle Control System RPM Higher Than Expected.” Nissan’s own documents shorten it to P0507 – ISC SYSTEM (idle speed control), the exact wording in its 2021 bulletins NTB21-049 and NTB21-080, both published on NHTSA’s site.
Identifix, a repair-information database used by professional shops, records the Nissan and Infiniti trigger as “Engine speed exceeded 200 RPM over target idle speed.” So the ECM is not reacting to a small wobble. It saw a clear, sustained gap between the idle it asked for and the idle the engine delivered.
What makes this Nissan-specific is how Nissan controls idle. On its drive-by-wire engines, the ECM moves the throttle plate inside the electronic throttle body (Nissan’s parts catalog calls the assembly the throttle chamber) to hold idle speed, and it stores a learned value for how much air the engine needs at idle. If that value is out of date, idle drifts high and P0507 follows. Nissan’s fix for an out-of-date value is a scan-tool procedure, not a new part.

Is P0507 Serious? Can You Drive Your Nissan?
Usually it is a low-urgency code. Nissan’s bulletin for the 2020-2021 Frontier (NTB21-080) applies when P0507 is stored and “there are no drivability concerns,” which shows the code often appears on vehicles that otherwise drive normally.
Still, do not leave it for months. A high idle makes an automatic transmission push harder against the brakes at a stop, a lit check engine light can fail a state emissions test, and it hides any new code that sets later. If the idle races, the engine stalls, or other codes appear with P0507, get it checked sooner.
Symptoms of P0507 on a Nissan
- Check engine light with P0507 stored, often the only sign.
- Higher-than-normal warm idle, especially in Park or Neutral.
- Stronger creep in Drive at a stop on automatic and CVT models.
- Companion codes: P0101 (MAF sensor) on the Kicks and Versa, or P0223 and P2135 (throttle position sensor) on the 2020-2021 Frontier, which Nissan grouped with P0507 in its bulletins.
- A high idle that began right after a throttle body cleaning, battery disconnect or ECM replacement.

Common Causes of P0507 on Nissan Vehicles
- An outdated learned idle air value. Identifix lists an idle air volume relearn as the most popular confirmed fix for this Nissan and Infiniti high-idle complaint. A freshly cleaned throttle body passes more air at the same plate angle, so the old learned value can produce a high idle until the ECM relearns.
- The throttle body itself. Identifix’s most popular fixes also include a cleaned or replaced throttle body.
- A weak 12-volt battery. For the 2018-2021 Kicks and 2020-2021 Versa, Nissan’s NTB21-049 starts the P0507 repair with a battery test and recharge or replacement.
- ECM software. For the 2020-2021 Frontier, NTB21-080 tells dealers to reprogram the ECM if its part number matches the listed calibrations.
Nissan Service Bulletins for P0507
Nissan has published technical service bulletins (NTBs) that name P0507 directly. The first two are on NHTSA’s site as manufacturer communications.
| Bulletin | Date | Vehicles | What Nissan tells dealers to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| NTB21-049 (EC21-008) | June 8, 2021 | 2018-2021 Kicks (P15), 2020-2021 Versa (N18) | MIL on with P0101 and/or P0507: test the 12-volt battery, recharge or replace it, erase all DTCs, idle the engine at least 20 minutes, then perform Idle Air Volume Learning |
| NTB21-080 (EC21-018) | September 1, 2021 | 2020-2021 Frontier (D40) | MIL on with P0223, P0507 and/or P2135 and no drivability concern: confirm the ECM part number and reprogram the ECM if it matches |
| NTB05-067 | Not on NHTSA’s site; cited by Identifix | Not listed by Identifix; its entry covers Nissan and Infiniti drive-by-wire models | If idle is too high for the relearn to complete, disconnect one or more fuel injectors to bring RPM down, then perform Idle Air Volume Learning |
NTB21-049 sets strict conditions before the relearn: hood closed, ambient temperature above 5°C (40°F), coolant above 80°C (175°F) and all electric accessories off. Its warranty coding names the throttle chamber (part number prefix 16119) as the primary failed part and allows 0.6 hours for the battery test, code erase and relearn, so Nissan treats the fix as a short procedure, not a part swap.
We could not open NTB05-067 itself. Identifix adds that technicians often must disconnect two injectors before RPM drops low enough for the relearn to take, and that its related procedure document, written for the 2002 Altima, applies to 2002-2005 Nissan drive-by-wire models. Bulletins are written for dealer technicians, so have a Nissan dealer confirm one applies to your VIN.

Nissan’s Idle Air Volume Learning and Throttle Valve Closed Position Learning
These two procedures are the heart of a Nissan P0507 repair. After an ECM reprogram, Nissan’s NTB16-086b (2013-2014 Sentra) and NTB21-080 (2020-2021 Frontier) both list the order: Throttle Valve Closed Position, Idle Air Volume Learning, Accelerator Closed Position, then erase DTCs.
Throttle Valve Closed Position Learning
As its name says, this records the throttle valve’s fully closed position. In both NTB16-086b and NTB21-080 it comes before the idle learn, and Identifix’s P0507 procedure also runs it, along with Accelerator Pedal Released Position Learning, before Idle Air Volume Learning.
Idle Air Volume Learning (IAVL)
This teaches the ECM how much air the engine needs to hold its target idle. Identifix notes the idle will not relearn if engine speed is too high, which is why NTB05-067 has technicians disconnect injectors. NTB16-086b lists the common conditions for IAVL to complete:
- Engine coolant temperature 70-100°C (158-212°F)
- Battery voltage more than 12.9 V at idle
- Selector lever in P or N
- Electric loads off (air conditioner, headlamps, rear window defogger)
- Steering wheel straight ahead
- Vehicle stopped, transmission warmed up
If IAVL does not complete within a few minutes, the bulletin says a condition may be out of range and points to the vehicle’s Electronic Service Manual. A battery under 12.9 V at idle can block it, which fits NTB21-049’s battery-first approach. Nissan describes the procedure with its CONSULT scan tool. Identifix says the manual procedure on older models also works if followed exactly, with the engine and automatic transmission warmed up.
How to Diagnose P0507 on a Nissan, Step by Step
- Read every stored code and note P0101, P0223 or P2135 if present.
- Check for a bulletin. 2018-2021 Kicks and 2020-2021 Versa: NTB21-049. 2020-2021 Frontier: NTB21-080.
- Test the 12-volt battery. IAVL needs more than 12.9 V at idle.
- Ask what changed. A throttle body cleaning, battery disconnect or ECM replacement points to a relearn.
- Run Throttle Valve Closed Position, then Idle Air Volume Learning with the conditions above met.
- Clear codes and verify. If the idle will not relearn, Identifix suggests a dealer try the relearn with the factory scan tool; if the problem remains, the throttle body may need replacement.

Which Nissan Models Set P0507?
This table combines the models in Nissan’s bulletins with the Nissan models and engines Identifix lists for its high-idle P0507 fix. It is not a complete list.
| Model | Years and engine | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Kicks | 2018-2021 | Nissan NTB21-049 |
| Versa | 2020-2021 | Nissan NTB21-049 |
| Frontier | 2020-2021; also 2005 2.5L and 2007 4.0L | Nissan NTB21-080; Identifix |
| Altima | 2002-2011 2.5L; 2002-2008 3.5L | Identifix |
| Maxima | 2002-2010 3.5L | Identifix |
| Murano | 2003-2009 3.5L | Identifix |
| Rogue | 2008-2011 2.5L | Identifix |
| Sentra | 2003-2006 1.8L; 2002-2006 2.5L | Identifix |
| 350Z | 2003-2007 3.5L | Identifix |
| Quest | 2004-2007 3.5L | Identifix |
| Pathfinder | 2002-2004 3.5L | Identifix |
| Xterra | 2005 2.5L; 2007 4.0L | Identifix |
Identifix’s list also includes Infiniti models such as the 2003-2007 G35 and 2005-2010 FX35. Confirm your exact year and engine with our VIN decoder, and check open campaigns with the NHTSA recall lookup.
How Much Does It Cost to Fix P0507 on a Nissan?
Cost depends on whether the relearn fixes it. We found no openable published dollar figure for the relearn or for a Nissan throttle body replacement, so ask your shop for a quote based on its labor rate.
| Repair | Published estimate | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Idle Air Volume Learning (procedure only) | No dollar figure published; 0.6 hours on Nissan warranty coding for battery test, erase and relearn | Nissan NTB21-049 |
| ECM reprogramming under NTB21-080 | No dollar figure published; ask a dealer about warranty status | Nissan NTB21-080 |
A throttle body replacement is the expensive outcome, and Nissan’s bulletins show it is rarely the first answer: NTB21-049 names the throttle chamber as the failed part for warranty coding, yet the repair is a battery test and relearn.
P0507 on a Nissan vs a Honda
Same code, different repair path. Older Hondas used a separate idle air control valve and a fast idle thermo valve, so the hunt often ends at one of those parts, as our P0507 Honda guide explains. A drive-by-wire Nissan has no separate idle valve: the throttle body does the job, and Nissan’s documented answer is the closed-position and idle-air-volume relearn, plus a battery test or ECM update on models covered by NTB21-049 and NTB21-080. Do not mix the two makes’ procedures.
