General information
Toyota made changes to the Toyota Corolla in 2019 and 2023. This is the twelfth version of the Corolla Hatchback, another name for the five-door body. It is a 4.37-meter-long mid-size passenger car. Since it came out in 1966, more than 50 million cars have been sold, making it what Toyota calls the world’s best-selling nameplate.
We will only talk about the five-door version in this piece. However, there are also sedans (sedans), family cars (touring sports), and SUVs with the same name but different body styles.

Even though it’s not fancy, the interior looks good because it was well put together, but the back seats and trunk are pretty small. This car is best for calm drivers who don’t want to get too excited on the road and value comfort over speed.
In the same price range as the Toyota Corolla 5-door are cars like the SEAT Leon, the Ford Focus, the Opel Astra, and the Peugeot 308. The Toyota is better because it has a hybrid propulsion system that works well.
The other cars in the same price range have more traditional propulsion systems. As we already said, the hybrid’s ease of use and fuel efficiency shine more clearly in the city. Many other cars listed can be bought as plug-in hybrids if you can afford it. The Toyota, on the other hand, can’t.

What kind of motor does the Toyota Corolla have?
As before, the Toyota Corolla Hatchback only has two non-plug-in electric powertrains. Many changes, though, have made the highest power output 140 hp (version 140 H) and 196 hp (version 200H).
Fuel engines have mostly stayed the same since Toyota first made the car. The 140H has a 1.8-liter engine displacement, and the 200H has a 2.0-liter engine size. The electric motors, which are now lighter, more compact and more powerful, are where most of the work has been done, according to Toyota.

The Toyota Corolla 140H should be smoother now that the changes have been made. It is also quicker, but it is still not a car built for high-speed highway driving. You should go for the 200H if that’s what you want to do. But if you’ve never driven a Toyota hybrid before, you should try one out before you buy one. They’re great in the city but initially feel strange on the highway.
Putting aside the engine, this Toyota is generally described as an easy car to drive, with a setup that works well on all types of roads and a suspension tuned more for comfort than sport. Toyota knows how to make many people happy, and the 5-door Corolla is a great example.
The 200H is also offered with a sportier GR Sport finish. This word fits the Toyota Corolla a little too well. With its more powerful bumpers and black and red accents, it does look that way, but mechanically it is the same calm hybrid that rewards smooth driving. It is not a hot hatch, but with 196 DIN hp it has enough power to pass other vehicles.
The Corolla GR Sport (or any trim level) is not the right car for you if you usually drive quickly on the highway. It’s not bad at all. It doesn’t go “in its element” like a Honda Civic or a Golf TSI with 150 hp.
On steep hills the engine has to rev, and the continuously variable hybrid transmission can make it sound busy. So the almost 200 horsepower may not feel as strong as it does in some cars with conventional gearboxes.
One of the best things about the Corolla Hatchback is that it can be used in and on the edges of cities. This is because the gas engine can sometimes be turned off, and the car can move forward in electric mode—as long as you know how to use the accelerator carefully and not speed up too much. That makes it one of the most fuel-efficient non-plug-in cars of its size for city driving.

The official WLTP fuel use is roughly 4.5 l/100 km for the 140H and 5.1 l/100 km for the 200H, depending on trim. In the US, where the hatchback is gas-only, the Corolla Hybrid sedan is EPA-rated at up to 50 mpg combined. These are less powerful than their gasoline-powered competitors, but only by a little. Hybrid Toyotas are fuel-efficient in cities because the electric motor often works better there. But it’s hard to see high usage, even at high speeds and on the highway.
In city driving, where the electric motor does more of the work, real results can come close to the official figure, a big plus compared with many gas cars. Careful drivers can sometimes do better. On the highway, fuel use rises because the gas engine runs more of the time, so expect higher numbers at sustained high speeds. Your results will depend on speed, load, weather and driving style.

The new Toyota Corolla 140H can go from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.1 seconds, according to Toyota, while the old 1.8 hybrid (125H) took about 11 seconds. That is a big change, and it now compares well with rivals of similar power.
The Corolla 200H, on the other hand, can hit 100 km/h in 7.4 seconds, per Toyota. It is the better choice for regular trips with a full load. Because of how well it works, passing and joining fast roads will be easier. At high speeds, the almost 200 horsepower isn’t easy to notice.
