The 2027 Honda Civic Type R has been at the center of enthusiast forums for months, and the wait is over. Honda has confirmed the details, and the answer to the biggest question is clear: the Type R stays a gas-only, manual-only, front-wheel-drive hot hatch for 2027.

The car earned its cult status the hard way. A previous-generation Type R set a front-wheel-drive production car record at the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 2017 (7:43.80, per Honda), and the current generation reclaimed a front-wheel-drive record there in April 2023 with a European-spec Type R S running a 7:44.881 lap on the longer 20.8-km layout, according to Carscoops. It also kept the manual alive and proved a hot hatch could be a real driver’s car.

For 2027, Honda chose evolution, not revolution. Below, we lay out what is confirmed, what changed from the 2026 car, how the price compares, and how to decide between a new 2027 and a leftover 2026.

For the record, many early rumors (a hybrid powertrain, 320-plus horsepower, a late-2026 reveal with 2027 deliveries) did not match what Honda announced. Where we previously published estimates, we now show the official figures.

We label anything Honda has not confirmed as reported or expected. Performance claims such as 0-60 mph times are not published by Honda, so we do not list them.

2027 Civic Type R at a Glance

• Release date: revealed October 1, 2026; Honda says it arrives at dealers in October 2026. Confirmed.

Honda already has. The refreshed 2027 Civic Type R was announced through Honda’s US newsroom on October 1, 2026, in Torrance, California, alongside a full specifications sheet. Honda also notes that 2027 marks the 30th anniversary of the Civic Type R globally (the first one went on sale in Japan as a 1997 model) and the 10th anniversary in North America.

When You Can Order One

Because cars are arriving at dealers in October 2026, you can order or reserve one through a Honda dealer now. Exact availability depends on your dealer’s allocation and on paint color, so call ahead before you visit.

First Customer Deliveries

First deliveries of the 2027 Honda Civic Type R should begin in October 2026, based on Honda’s statement that the car “will start to arrive at Honda dealerships this month.” Early buyers who put down a deposit with a dealer will likely be first in line, though Honda has not published allocation numbers.

What We Know About the 2027 Type R

The Honda Civic Type R refresh is evolutionary, not radical. Honda kept the winning recipe and focused on cooling, chassis feel and cabin features.

Confirmed Updates

According to Honda, the 2027 Honda Civic Type R gets:

• A more aggressive front fascia with a deeper front splitter for more downforce and a larger grille opening. Honda says reduced turbulence improves airflow velocity and engine cooling, helping sustain performance during track driving.
• Optimized suspension damping in +R mode for better road-following, less bouncing and less impact harshness.
• A faster Rev Match system for quicker engine response on downshifts.
• More direct brake-pedal feel, achieved by adding a yoke spring to the brake pedal to reduce play in the linkage.
• A redesigned engine cover inspired by early Japanese-market Type R engines.

To clarify, these are refinements, not a full reinvention. Power, gearing and the basic chassis carry over.

Spy Shots and Leaks So Far

Before the reveal, camouflaged test cars were widely reported, and the leaks correctly suggested that the wide fenders and big rear wing would stay and that the front bumper would get new vent shapes. Several popular rumors turned out to be wrong for the US car: there is no hybrid, horsepower did not rise above 315, and the car arrived in late 2026 rather than in 2027. That is a useful reminder to treat pre-reveal leaks with caution.

Engine and Performance Specs

The 2027 Honda Civic Type R specs center on the same Type R turbo engine: the K20C 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. Honda calls the Type R the most powerful Honda production vehicle ever sold in the US.

Expected Horsepower and Torque

The Civic Type R 2027 horsepower figure is no longer an expectation. Honda rates it at 315 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 310 lb-ft of torque from 2,600 to 4,000 rpm, identical to the 2026 car. Our earlier estimate of 320-plus horsepower was wrong. The engine runs 25.2 psi of boost and revs to 7,000 rpm.

Transmission, Will the 6-Speed Manual Stay?

Yes. Honda confirms the 2027 Civic Type R is offered only with a 6-speed manual, and it describes the Type R as the only car in its class available exclusively with a manual transmission. It keeps a lightweight single-mass flywheel, an LED shift-light indicator and, for 2027, a quicker Rev Match system. The aluminum shift knob now has a darker gray finish.

0 to 60 Estimate

Honda does not publish an official 0-60 mph time for the Civic Type R, so we no longer list an estimate. Because power and gearing are unchanged, acceleration should be very close to the 2026 car’s; independent instrumented tests from outlets such as Car and Driver and MotorTrend are the best reference once they test the 2027 model. The helical limited-slip differential helps the front tires put power down out of corners, and Michelin Pilot Sport 4S summer tires are standard.

Hybrid Type R? The Big Question

The Civic Type R hybrid rumors split the community for months. For the 2027 model in the US, the question is settled: there is no hybrid.

What Honda Has Said Publicly

Honda’s 2027 release describes only the turbocharged K20C gas engine and a manual transmission. Honda has not announced any hybrid Civic Type R for the US. Honda does sell hybrid versions of the regular Civic, and it says electrified models made up nearly a third of its total US sales in 2025, but none of that applies to the 2027 Type R.

Why a Hybrid Type R Might Happen

Emissions rules keep tightening worldwide, and a hybrid system could add low-end torque while helping meet regulations. That pressure is real for future generations. Any hybrid Type R remains speculation until Honda announces it; nothing official points to one in the near term.

Why Purists Are Worried

Purists worry that a future hybrid would add weight and soften the car’s raw, mechanical character. For now, the 2027 model avoids that debate entirely: it is gas-only and manual-only, at 3,188 pounds.

Design and Styling Changes

Honda refined the proven look rather than redrawing it. The aggressive stance stays, with the most visible change at the front.

Exterior Refresh

The new front fascia has a deeper splitter and a larger grille opening. Honda says these changes increase downforce and improve engine cooling. Honda’s release does not list changes to the big rear wing, wide fenders or rear styling, so expect those to look like the 2026 car.

Interior Upgrades

Inside the 2027 Honda Civic Type R, the red front sport seats are heated for the first time, with three-level controls, and get a new perforation pattern with black striping. Ultrasuede now covers the upper instrument panel and front door panels, which Honda says also reduces windshield glare. Other changes include a diamond-pattern dash trim panel, black vent and climate knobs, dark-gray console and door-handle trim, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and two added USB-C ports above the wireless phone charger.

Infotainment gains Google built-in (including Google Maps, Google Play and the Gemini assistant) alongside Alexa built-in. Honda Sensing also improves: pedestrian detection for the Collision Mitigation Braking System gains better motorcycle and bicycle detection, adaptive cruise and lane keeping are retuned, and Post-Collision Braking is now standard.

New Colors

Honda offers four colors for 2027: the new Meteorite Gray Metallic, plus Boost Blue Pearl, Sonic Gray Pearl and Championship White. Premium paint adds $455, according to Honda’s pricing footnote.

Pricing and Trim Strategy

The 2027 Civic Type R price went up, as expected, but it stays a single, well-equipped trim with no factory option packages beyond paint.

Expected Starting MSRP

Honda lists the 2027 Honda Civic Type R at $48,695 MSRP, or $49,990 total suggested retail price including the $1,295 destination charge. Premium paint adds $455. For comparison, the 2026 Type R was $46,895 MSRP ($48,090 with its $1,195 destination charge), so the total price is up $1,900. Our earlier estimate of about $47,000 was too low.

How It Compares to GR Corolla and Hyundai Elantra N

The Civic Type R vs GR Corolla debate stays fierce. The Toyota offers all-wheel drive and rally roots, while the Honda counters with front-drive precision, a polished chassis and a manual-only lineup. Against the Hyundai Elantra N, the Honda costs more but is generally seen by reviewers as the more refined car. Owner-Reported Problems and Recalls

The 2027 model is too new for owner data, and NHTSA showed no complaints or recalls for the 2026 or 2027 Civic Type R when we checked on October 2, 2026. Because the 2027 car is a refresh of the same FL5 generation sold since the 2023 model year, here is what owners of earlier model years have reported. These are unverified owner reports, not confirmed defects.

Total complaints, 2023-2025 Civic Type R: 27 (13 for 2023, 10 for 2024, 4 for 2025). Top components named (a complaint can list more than one):

Recall campaigns: 1. Campaign 24V744000 covers certain 2023-2025 Civic Type R models (along with many other Honda and Acura models): the steering transmission assembly may have been manufactured incorrectly, causing excessive internal friction and difficulty steering. That recall lines up with the steering-heavy complaint pattern. If you are shopping for a used FL5, check its VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls and make sure the repair has been done.

• Buy the 2027 if you track your car (the cooling and downforce updates matter most there), live somewhere cold (heated seats), or want the newest infotainment.
• Buy a leftover 2026 if you can find one at or below sticker and mainly drive on the street. You get the same performance for less money.
• Consider the Civic Si if you want a cheaper, lighter manual Civic and do not need Type R performance.
