Sometimes, it seems like everyone I know either has or has had a Corolla at some point. USA Today ranks the 2016 Toyota Corolla among America’s top five best-selling cars. Its reliability ratings have always been stellar. I could check out the new 2016 Toyota Corolla, thanks to Hannover Toyota in Hannover, PA.
I recently saw the new 2016 trim, the Special Edition, limited to just 8,000 units. The pricing for the 2016 Toyota Corolla begins at $17,230 for the L trim. The LE trim is priced at $18,665, while the LE Eco is $19,065. The S trim starts at $19,295. The Special Edition I checked out today is priced at approximately $20,635.
The 2016 Toyota Corolla has a 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine that produces 132 horsepower and 128 pound-feet of torque. This power is transmitted to the front wheels via an automatic transmission. For those who prefer more control, a six-speed manual transmission is available for the L and S trims. The overall MPG is around 29 in the city and 37 on the highway unless you choose the LE Eco, rated at 30 in the city and 40 on the road.
Today, I’m in the Special Edition version, which adds 17-inch black aluminium wheels. Inside, there’s a ton of red stitching on the seats, door trim, shift boot, and floor mats. Another cool feature of the Special Edition is the keyless entry with a push-button start.
I took the 2016 Toyota Corolla down some back roads to test its power. The centre of the gauges shows how you’re driving, incentivising better driving for improved gas mileage. The Corolla’s fit and finish are excellent, similar to the Scion I, which I checked out the other day. I think Toyota’s products always have a solid fit and finish.
I put it in sports mode to see how quickly the paddle shifters reacted. The sport mode button is right behind the shifter, allowing the RPMs to go higher than they usually would in automatic mode. This is a nice feature, especially if you like to have fun while driving.
Another thing is that this car is hushed regarding road noise. It was silent. Toyota always takes bumps like a champ, too.
All 2016 Toyota Corolla trims have LED low-beam headlights, halogen high-beams, and LED daytime running lights. Fog lights are included from the LE trim and up. I like the styling of the S and Special Edition trims. They feature piano black inserts accented by a chrome border, which makes the Corolla look more aggressive.
The wheel sizes vary depending on the trim level. The L trim has 15-inch wheels, the LE gets 16-inch wheels, and the S and Special Edition trims have 17-inch wheels. The SE trim also features a gloss black finish on the wheels.
On the side, the S and SE trims add integrated turn signals to the heated power outside mirrors. Swinging around the back, the S and SE trims include a minor spoiler and chrome-tipped exhaust outlets.
Since we’re around back, I must say that the 2016 Toyota Corolla has a decent amount of trunk space. If that isn’t enough, you can fold down the back seats for even more room. With 41.4 inches of rear legroom, there’s plenty of space, even for a six-foot-tall person like me. Upon starting the car, the gauge needles do a full sweep, and you’re welcomed by a bright blue illumination, which looks fantastic, especially early in the morning.
The 2016 Toyota Corolla features an upgraded infotainment interface. All trims except the L now have Entune Premium Audio with integrated navigation and an app suite. The touchscreen provides audio settings, trip information, and a rear-view camera.
The L and SE trims have fabric-trimmed seats, while the LE and S trims feature SofTex upholstery. Although the steering wheel doesn’t telescope out as far as other cars I’ve reviewed, I could still get comfortable behind the wheel.

The Toyota Corolla is known for its insane reliability. If you check reliability ratings from Consumer Reports or other third-party companies, the Corolla always scores excellently. Besides its reliability, these seats are comfortable, and the gauges light up in a lovely light blue colour—I’m digging that.
The Corolla has been around since 1966 without a name change, which speaks volumes about its reliability and value. Whether it’s its stellar reliability or the fact that you get so much for a reasonable price, the Toyota Corolla does it right. That’s why it’s been a favourite for over 50 years.
